FCI opens 7 wheat procurement centres in Himachal Pradesh

A Spokesman of the Food and Civil Supplies Department informed here today that on the request of the State Government, Food Corporation of India (FCI) has opened seven collection/procurement centres for purchasing wheat during the current rabi season in the State. He said that these centres would be opened at Nagrota Bagwan, Gujjar Ka Talab, Una, Nerchowk, Nalagarh, Paonta Sahib and Thakur Dwara.

He said that detailed discussions were held by the concerned Deputy Commissioners/Sub Divisional Officers and District Controllers with the people of the areas before opening the centres and detailed information about the scheme was provided to the people. He said that FCI was providing purchase price of Rs. 1000 per quintal to farmers as per the directions of the Government of India. He said that 53 tonnes of wheat had been purchased in these seven collection/procurement centres till now. He said that farmers of the State have earned reasonable prices for their produce with the opening of these centres.

He further said that private traders have also made purchases and enhanced wheat purchase price of Rs. 1050 instead of Rs. 1025 had been procured from them after opening of the collection centres of FCI. He said that these collection centres of FCI would be functioning upto 31st May, 2008.

The Spokesman urged the farmers to sell their additional wheat produce in these centres and said that such efforts would be made in future also.
